Zalora hits 1M orders with 17.9M monthly visitors in the region

Zalora, a Rocket Internet backed e-commerce platform based in Singapore, has just announced that they have crossed their one millionth order mark.

Zalora is a brand that most of us are familiar with. Earlier in March, we reported that they have over 500,000 daily visitors on their website. Zalora just informed us that they have also crossed their one millionth order milestone. They have also released an infographic revealing some interesting statistics:

With its phenomenal traction, Zalora is definitely one of the top e-commerce brands in the region right now. Of course, the traction is fueled by the recent €20 million (US$26 million) investment from German retail giant Tengelmann Group. While Zalora Taiwan winded down and shifted their operations to Singapore (perhaps from a lack of traction in Taiwan), the company is still seeing healthy traction and interest from Asia as a whole.

8villages is one of the growing startups in Indonesia and set its sights at a market that many startups don’t pay attention to. Farmers with feature phones may be a combination considered to be uncool by local startups which tend to refer to Silicon Valley where practically everyone there uses a smartphone. Indonesia is clearly a different market, similar to many growing Asian nations as feature phones are still dominant. Just because it’s a feature phone market doesn’t mean it can’t be monetized. mig33 with its business model shows that this is possible.

With the large consumer potential and 8villages’ choice of partners which includes academics, it seems like this startup has taken the right path. 8villages is looking at the possibility to expand its coverage to neighboring countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines in which farmers there also face similar issues. The large potential of this field is backed by the fact that Nokia has its Life Tools suite of applications aimed at this very market in developing countries.

8villages delivers an important lesson for many in the Indonesian startup landscape about the importance of understanding the consumers and the problems to be solved. The characters of Indonesian consumers determine the development of a startup. Execution with passion to deliver a solution to a problem should help startups to survive and grow.

8villagesはインドネシアのスタートアップ業界の多くの人にとって消費者と解決すべき問題を理解することの重要性について大事なレッスンを提供している。インドネシアの消費者の特徴はスタートアップの発展を決めるものだ。問題を解決するためのソリューションを情熱を持って実行すれば、スタートアップの生き残りそして成長を助長するはずだ。

Consumers with feature phones do not pose a significant challenge because the use of SMS apparently is easier to monetize than through smartphone apps. Its widespread use allows for a larger traction and the small fee charged to consumers will continuously snowball. Imagine if 70% of farmers in one province become subscribers to this service. What if you add two or three more provinces? Of course, this aspect isn’t the sole reason to build a technology based company in Indonesia.

As part of the startup landscape, we should ask ourselves if the service we provide will have actual benefit to the community and not just limited to profit projections. Hopefully 8villages can provide a reflection for all and something to learn from.

Telkomsel, XL, Indosat Forms Strategic Alliance For Digital Mobile Payments

Indonesia’s top 3 carriers (Telkomsel, XL, Indosat) today announced strategic partnership involving their electronic money transfer platform. XL Tunai, Dompetku Indosat and Telkomsel TCash announced their integrated partnership that will enable consumer to send money via SMS throughout the 3 networks.

インドネシアの3大通信企業（Telkomsel、XL、Indosat）が本日、電子マネー送金プラットフォームに関する戦略的提携を発表した。XL Tunai、Dompetku Indosat、Telkomsel TCashは、消費者がSMSを通じて3社ネットワーク間で送金が可能となる統合提携を発表。

In an announcement today, Director of Indonesia’s central bank Darmin Nasution said that this strategic partnership will help push the digital payment adoption throughout the country, and to support government’s program for cashless society. With this partnership, 230 million users will be enabled to send money using the integrated platform, combining XL’s, Telkomsel’s and Indosat’s subscription number. TCash customers can send money to XL Tunai customers or Dompetku and vice versa.

今日行われた発表のなかで、インドネシア中央銀行の頭取Darmin Nasution氏は、この戦略的提携によりインドネシア国内のデジタル決済の採用を促進するとともに、政府の取組みであるキャッシュレス社会をサポートすることに繋がるだろうと述べた。同提携により、今後は2億3000万人のユーザーが、XLとTelkomsel、Indosatの利用者番号を統合した統合プラットフォームを利用して送金をすることができるようになる。TCashの顧客はXL TunaiやDompetkuの顧客に送金することができ、その逆も可能だ。

So far, a few companies are trying to tackle the digital payment issue in Indonesia and has been pushing hard for regulations as well as consumer education. Although mostly still focuses on bank-based payments (credit/debit card) but local telco carriers already realise the significance of digital micropayment in Indonesia.

Companies such as Coda Payments has been pushing its effort by partnering with Axis, but the move has always been dispersed by exclusivity. Telcos never partner with each other and tried to keep the revenue inside their own platform, and now the wall has been torn down by this partnership. Hey, together might not always mean better, but this partnership show the maturity level taken by telco companies in order to grow together and grow the market as well as the industry.

Micepad aims to improve the conference experience

One of the key drivers of Singapore’s hospitality industry is the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) business. SGpad, an iPad rental service, is looking to ride on the growth in the MICE industry with Micepad, an app that enhances the conference experience for attendees.

With Micepad, an event organiser can easily customise and deploy a complete event engagement app by choosing the required modules and uploading content. One of the things I frequently do at events is to google further information about the speakers. Micepad eliminates the constraints of print and enables event organisers to provide more information to their attendees.

Kevin, one of the founders of Micepad, shared with me that the service has been adopted by leading financial institutions and software consultancies such as Standard Chartered Bank, SAP and Wipro to name a few (the other clients have their names withheld by NDAs). The team has implemented Micepad in Singapore and Hong Kong over the past few months and they plan to expand to other markets like Malaysia, Hong Kong and New York with the help of newly acquired channel partners over the next few months.

Having thrown away countless of paper collected at events, I can see the usefulness of an application like Micepad both to attendees and event organisers.

One of the key challenges of apps like Micepad is deciding whether they are meant to complement or substitute the traditional print materials used at events. If it is the former, then cost and functions will be important in adoption; if it is the latter, then availability for a wide range of devices is key (currently the full version of Micepad is available only for the iPad).

家の排水溝が詰まってしまったら本当に厄介だよね？そんな時どうする？どこで修理サービスを探す？そんな時に、モバイルインターネットを活用して日常生活で起こるそんな問題を解決しようとするXioQuWuYou（文字通りの意味は「住居生活サービスの心配はご無用」）を利用すれば、解決策を提案してくれるかもしれない。

同サービスにはiOSとAndroid向けのアプリがあり、自宅の住所に基づいて、排水溝修理サービス、飲料水の配達、家事、鍵のトラブル、引越、ジム、洗濯などの生活サポートサービスを紹介してくれる。

Open the app, choose the neighborhood you are in and the life services nearby will emerge. You can see contact information, price range, introduction, etc.. Users also can rate a service or write a review.

According to the official data, now there are over 100 thousand entries of life services in it and every single one has been verified manually.

アプリを開いて地域を選択すれば、近所にある生活サポートサービスが表示される。連絡先に関する情報や価格、サービスの紹介などが閲覧でき、ユーザーはサービスに対する評価をつけたりやレビューを書くこともできる。

公式データによると、同アプリには10万軒以上の生活サポートサービスが登録していて、いずれのサービスも同チームの手作業による承認を受けている。

Dokter Gratis is an app for people in Indonesia to get a live consultation with a doctor. I gave the app a try and I was able to text-chat with a doctor after being put on hold for just a bit. The doctor I talked to answered a few basic health questions. There are a few chatroom topics for people to choose from, like general health, diabetes, women’s health, and baby’s health.

The service so far looks good as a first step before making a decision to go to a hospital. I have confirmed with the team behind it that Dokter Gratis is 100 percent free, this is despite the written explanation on the terms and conditions page that only the first week of use is free.

Dokter Gratisは、インドネシアの人を対象に開発されたアプリで、医師とライブチャットで健康に関する相談ができるサービスだ。私も試しに同アプリを利用してみたら、少しの保留時間を経て、医師と文章によるチャットをすることができた。チャットルームには「健康全般」「糖尿病」「女性の健康」「乳児の健康」など、いくつかのトピックがあり、その中から特定のトピックを選択することができる。

同アプリは、病院に行くべきかどうかを決める前の第1ステップとして、なかなか良いサービスのようだ。また、無料期間は利用開始の最初の１週間に限ると利用規約ページに記載されてはいるが、100％無料で同サービスが利用できることもDokter Gratisチームに確認をとった。
