The most unusual app on the list is 1checker, which performs online proofreading to ensure that your copy would pass muster with the most stringent of grammar and spelling nazis. Aimed at English-speaking markets, it has apps for Windows and is free so long as you register with the site.

15 Web Entrepreneurs Under 30 Doing Awesome Stuff in China

Forbes just put up a list of 30 young disruptors in China working across all kinds of fields. But its list gives no information about any of the entrepreneurs’ ventures – and all its links are broken – so it’s done rather badly.

So we decided to pick out the individuals who’ve specifically created web startups, check out their sites and services, and see what these youngsters are working on. The end result is 15 web entrepreneurs under 30 in China that we should look out for this year.

フォーブス誌があらゆる分野で取り組む中国の若い起業家30人のリストを掲載した。だが、そのリストにはそれらの起業家がどんなことをしているのかについての情報が全くない —— そして、掲載されているすべてのリンクも壊れているので、このリストの完成度はかなり悪い。

It’s noticeable that quite a few of them are working on globally-minded businesses. Here are the 15 people and their startups, some of which will be familiar to regular readers:

Zhang Lianglun

CEO, Mizhe

As we noted earlier this year, Mizhe is a unique site, a sort of online shopping guide that offers discounts for shoppers on top Chinese e-commerce sites. It raised about US$1.6 million from IDG Capital at the start of this year.

But with Chinese consumers being so unwilling to pay up for web-based content like music – or anything digital – Jing.fm will need to find a revenue stream to keep the music flowing.

If there’s any group of online consumers in China that are actually willing to pay up, it’s MMO gamers. And that’s the target audience for the Yoka Games online store, selling real-world gaming merchandise to fans of virtual adventures.

Backed by Sequoia/Zhenfund money, Peak labs is the creation of US-China educated Ji Yichao and it makes some pretty impressive apps for iOS. Chief among these is Mammoth Browser for iOS which hit the headlines in 2011 because Ji developed the eye-candy browser while still in high school. In our interview with him, Ji told us that he made the app because he felt that multi-tab browsing on mobile was a nightmare, which was certainly true at the time.

China’s daily deals industry is a tough business to be in where the top players pull in over $30 million per day in revenue, and everyone else is left fighting for scraps. That’s unless you’re a highly specialized site that ignores all those cheap restaurant deals – which is exactly what Jumei does. Instead, it focuses on deals for well-known brands of make-up and skincare items at very persuasive prices.

This tech and startup blog is a nice breath of fresh air in China’s regurgitation machine of a media landscape. Ignoring the usual copy-paste malarkey among web portals, it positions itself as a sort of Chinese-language TechCrunch with a mix of local and global tech news thrown in. We like it.

As with the furniture business mentioned above, Beely makes its own-brand items – this time for skincare products. It’s a very tough area in which to build up trust, especially as stores and other online outlets are filled with skincare items that might’ve been mixed by a farmer with a random assortment of chemicals in a barrel. It’s difficult to see how this can work for Beely without some very specific angle – like using only organic raw materials or something.

Taking on the might of Alibaba’s B2B platform for sourcing goods from China, Seed Studio focuses on one very niche area – the bits and pieces needed by electricians, engineers, and hardware hackers. All its products come from various Chinese manufacturers and are snapped up at wholesale prices by overseas buyers.

No, this startup doesn’t bring a rabbi to your door – imagine what a mecheieh that would be – and instead delivers a boxful of childens’ toys. Following the subcom business model, monthly gift subscriptions are available for about $30 per month.

Christopher explained that the missing piece of the puzzle lies in the right framework and mindset for these young Vietnamese entrepreneurs to be able to jumpstart companies, even though many of them who have a high potential to build new and disruptive products and services might have had a more value-added education at “gifted schools.”

新しく画期的なプロダクトやサービスを構築するための高い能力を持っている人の多くが「優れた学校」で付加価値の高い教育を受けていたとしても、若いベトナムの起業家が企業をジャンプスタートさせるためのパズルの最後のピースは社会体制と物の考え方の中にある、とZobrist氏は述べている。

TSC in Vietnam opens Startup Villa for tech nomads

The tech scene in Vietnam is looking up. In Ho Chi Minh City, the liveliest place in Vietnam, co-working space TSC provides technopreneurs with accommodation through Startup Villa.

ベトナムのコワーキングスペースTSCがテックプレーヤーのために「スタートアップ・ビラ」をオープン

ベトナムのテックシーンは波に乗りつつある。ベトナムで最も活気のある都市ホーチミンシティーでは、コワーキングスペースのTSCが「Startup Villa（スタートアップ・ビラ）」をオープンし、テック起業家に宿泊設備を提供している。

Why work alone in a coffee shop when you can do it alongside like-minded individuals? In Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), the most bustling part of Vietnam, The Start Center (TSC) has become home to more than 50 founders and their teams. The co-working space was founded by Christopher Zobrist and Hai Nguyen, also known as Roy. They are reinforcing the definition of home, turning the four-storey house adjacent to the office into a hostel for entrepreneurs, and nicknaming it Startup Villa, or formally known as Startup House.

同じ志を持つ人達とスペースを共有して働くことができるのに、なぜコーヒーショップに行って1人で働くの？ベトナムで最も活気に満ちた都市ホーチミンシティーでは、コワーキングスペースのThe Start Center（TSC）が、設立者およびそれぞれのチームメンバー合わせて50人以上の宿泊施設となっている。同コワーキングスペースを設立したのは、Christopher Zobrist氏と、Royとしても知られているHai Nguyen氏。両氏は「家」という定義を強化し、オフィスの隣にある4階建ての家を起業家向けのホステルに変え、「Startup Villa」と名付けた（以前はStartup Houseと呼ばれていた）。

The five-bedroom villa connects to TSC via an internal door, which opens from 7 in the morning to 5 in the evening so that these tech nomads can access the co-working space freely during that period of time, and TSC members can also hang out at the ground floor of the villa. According to Christopher, Startup Villa offers both short-term and long-term rates, which include laundry and housekeeping services, free access to TSC and wifi connection.

Startup Villaには5つの部屋があって、TSCには屋内ドアで通じている。このドアは朝7時から夕方5時まで利用できるので、宿泊設備を利用する起業家はその時間帯は自由にコワーキングスペースにアクセスできる。また、Startup Villaの1階は、TSCのスタッフも利用することができる。Zobrist氏によると、Startup Villaは短期および長期滞在向けの料金設定があり、この料金の中にはランドリーやハウスキーピングのサービス、TSCへの無料アクセス、wifi接続が含まれているとのこと。

It all started in 2010 when Roy, the co-founder and director of outreach, and Christopher, founder and managing director, met at an entrepreneurship conference in Vietnam. In that meeting, a few of the attendees formed an angel investor group called SAVVi Investors Forum. Their goal was to become the Y Combinator – an American seed funding accelerator — of Vietnam so they termed the project “V-Combinator.” After a year of meeting entrepreneurs, they still could not find the right fit for what they wanted to invest in.

But the story did not end there. After having visited a few co-working spaces around the world, like Hackerspace and The HUB in Singapore, as well as others in the U.S., and seeing the impact on the local startup ecosystem, Christopher met a consultant for The World Bank who was then visiting Vietnam. The consultant hinted about a grant to support “Virtual Incubation” in the Southeast Asian country. Christopher said, “it was a small grant, but I was able to convince my angel group to put up matching funds dedicated to creating a place that would help us to attract and develop high-potential startup teams right here in HCMC.”

Demand in Vietnam

When it comes to co-working spaces, what stands out most is a good plot of land — accessibility is key. Christopher shared that when they saw that a house near the city center was available, they jumped at it, and in May 2012, they started transforming the residential building into TSC.

He explained that about half of their members are local Vietnamese who studied abroad, and the other half consists of foreigners, some of whom, like himself, are of Vietnamese descent, who have decided to start their businesses in the Southeast Asian country with more than 87 million people.

He added, “We try to encourage collaboration between these two groups, and many co-founders come from both groups. We are starting to oranize regular meetups focused on sharing and developing skills in specific areas, for example, meetups for designers, techies, and founders.”

Zobrist氏はまた、「私達は、これらの2つのグループが一緒になって行うコラボレーションを推進しようとしています。多くの共同設立者がこの２つのグループに属しています。今後、特定分野のスキルを共有したり育成したりすることに特化した定期的なミートアップ ——例えば、デザイナーや技術者、設立者向けのミートアップなど—— を開催していこうと思っています。」と付け加え述べた。
