Strong demand is just the start

Almost everyone loved the idea of WooBoard but that didn’t easily translate into real customers. Who wouldn’t want more recognition personally and for their company? But first we had to pick which customers we could serve to begin with given a limited budget. Everyone had a different view of what they wanted and almost every situation asked for different features. So we had lots of trials (700 in fact) with 600 of them saying they’ll come back later. It was important to say no to them otherwise we’d build a product for everyone and lose everyone.

(Update: The following two paragraphs include extra details provided by Thomas). Bubbly monetizes through in-app purchases of premium services to connect with top celebrities – that’s on smartphones; on feature phones, the company has “partnerships with telcos as a value added service.” In terms of Bubbly’s reach, we’re told:

Top five countries are India, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Japan. In terms of the feature phone vs smartphone split, it is fairly aligned with the markets we’re in – i.e., about 85 percent feature phones with a slightly higher Android to iOS mix on the smartphone side. Countries like Japan obviously having a higher mix of smartphone users.

Moving forward, Teamie plans to expand its business regionally but Shivanu admitted that the company needed stronger branding to attract more brands. Like most new enterprise IT startups, it is usually hard to convince big clients to come on board. Despite that, Teamie is now serving some very good brands including WWF, Frost and Sullivan, and National University of Singapore.

It also seems confident on growth as Shivanu remarked, “We have some exciting partnerships to announce in the coming months, that will help us deliver learning services over our platform to consumers.”

Singapore’s Hipvan Completes Angel Round, Expands to Malaysia

An insider source tells us that Hipvan, a Singapore-based design-focused e-commerce site, has recently concluded an angel financing round. We also learned that with money in the bank, Hipvan has officially entered Malaysia with a .my domain, competing head-to-head with local site DSYR and also Singapore’s Kwerkee.

Hipvan co-founder Danny Tan confirmed that the company has just concluded an angel round but declined to reveal the investment sum or the names of any investors. He also declined to comment on the company’s sales figures but did say that the number of orders on Hipvan has doubled each month.
