I took Phroni for a quick text drive this evening. The installation is straight-forward, and perhaps my biggest hiccup was adjusting to the Firefox mobile browser. But the Phroni links showed up clearly, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were not as intrusive as I expected they might be.

I was a little surprised that if a notable word occurred more than once in an article, then each instance of that article is linked. I think that this might be unnecessary in short form articles like blog posts, although it might come in handy when reading very long documents on the web.

Chinese Women-Oriented Deals Site Attracts $5 Million in US VC Funding

While most of the far-too-numerous daily deals sites in China are going through a rough time, the woman-oriented group buying website MaiHao has today announced that it has secured some major investment funding.

The VC backing amounts to US$5 million, coming mainly from the Washington-based ICI an unidentified US investment firm. MaiHao’s CEO and co-founder, Hong Miaolong, hasn’t explained to the media how the funding might best be spent or invested.

The MaiHao site – at 17mh.com – sells discounted deals on products such as make-up, skincare products, and clothing. The company guarantees that all its branded products, such as Clinique and L’Oreal, are genuine items, which can be a serious issue on some group buy and e-commerce sites in the country. There are plenty of other deals sites taking a similarly specialist approach – in terms of focusing on women and a certain genre of products – such as Rakuten China’s group-buy portal which is a joint-venture between Rakuten (JSD:4755) and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU).

The timing for the MaiHao funding news is pretty apt, as today is International Women’s Day.

Check-In to China’s Pinterest For Foodies

Amid the glut of Pinterest clones in China, there are some interesting such social pinboard sites that are highly specialist – such as MeiShiXing.

As its Chinese name implies, it focuses totally on food, allowing users to photograph, describe, check-in to restaurants and cafés, and share their culinary experiences. Curiously, the startup behind MeiShiXing launched it with apps for iOS and Android (pictured below) a few months ago, but the website that you see above launched only this past weekend. The new website gives a nice overview of the now considerable collection of entries, but most of the action at the users’ end is still going on in the mobile apps.

At the moment, there’s no clear way for the site to monetize, but restaurant and other merchant tie-ups seem like the best way forward. In contrast, fashion-oriented Pinterest clones, such as Renren’s (NYSE:RENN), can bring in cash more immediately by driving traffic to e-commerce sites such as Alibaba’s Taobao.

Currently, MeiShiXing is invite-only, indicating that it’s not wanting to rush the opening-up process. If you have an invite code, new users can sign in with either their Sina or Tencent Weibo accounts.

Indian E-Commerce Site Launches Windows 8 App, Says It’s the First

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) new baby, Windows 8, is only a few days old, but already one Indian company is claiming to be the first to make an e-commerce app for the brand-new Windows app store. Cbazaar, an online store for handmade or ready-to-wear ethnic Indian clothing, already has its app online, made with the radical Windows 8 Metro style in mind.

Microsoft（NASDAQ:MSFT）の新製品Windows 8は、たった８日前に発表になったばかりだが、既に、あるインドの会社が、この最新のWindows アプリケーションストアにe-commerceアプリケーションを作る第１号になると発表している。ハンドメイド、あるいは既成のインド民族衣装のオンラインストア、Cbazaarが、この革新的なWindows8　Metroスタイルを視野にいれたアプリケーションオンラインを既に展開している。

The Cbazaar app – find it here in the Windows Store – uses bold-coloured panels and the full Metro user-interface (also pictured below), and allows users to browse, search, and buy anything they fancy without needing to go to the regular website. Since the site ships internationally, the app could be of use to Windows 8 early adopters around the world.

The app, inevitably, can only be run on Windows 8, so it’s currently only available to folks who’re testing out Microsoft’s free ‘consumer preview’ – i.e. beta – version of the desktop OS. Microsoft revealed earlier today that a million people had already downloaded the beta, and so the new Cbazaar Windows 8 app has a fairly sizeable amount of potential customers able to download and use it.

Cbazaar is owned by the major Indian web company Hanmer MSL. In an announcement this event, Rajesh Nahar, CEO & co-founder of Cbazaar, admitted:

I should have the Kuro Kage in about a week or two, and the Diamana X. Also the VTS are getting a ton of play on tour. Elements are starting to get some play too. The kuro kage is gonna be a hot one though, its picking up players almost as fast as the Tour Spec Speeders.
