“The default position still seems to be that if a woman and man both have a job, it’s the woman who will take a step back and stay home with the child,” Brad Harrington, research professor and executive director of Boston College’s Center for Work and Family, told me when I spoke with him three years ago. “But it never seems to be the knee-jerk reaction to ask why wouldn’t the man make the same choice.”

Of course, how Mayer and her husband choose to make these decisions is none of our business. But, again, what’s amazing to me is less about the personal decision of Mayer and her husband. Instead, I’m amazed that then, as now, nobody even wonders about paternity leave. All the focus is on Mayer.

Center for Work and Familyの研究教授および専務取締役であるBrad Harrington氏は、3年前の対談で私にそう述べた。

It has also become a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs in Malaysia, proving that a local startup has the ability to attract attention from major global VCs, and hold its own against colossal rivals like US-based Uber, which has ten times the amount of funding in its stash.

GrabTaxi isn’t the only success story to come out of Malaysia either. Jobstreet.com was acquired by Australia’s job ad portal SEEK for US$524 million.

Other startups have also found favour and fortune, albeit on a smaller scale.

Two years ago, Carlist.my, an automotive deal site, secured a US$13.5 million from Australia’s Carsales.com.

Malaysian-based video streaming platform iflix recently nabbed US$30 million led by Catcha Group and PLDT, which will go to funding its expansion into Southeast Asia. It will be producing original shows as well stream content not only from Hollywood, but also from within the Asian region such as Thailand, Seoul, Hong Kong,

To top it off, it costs only RM 8 per month (estimated US$1.86), far below Netflix’s cost of US$7.99 per month in the US market.

Three months ago, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba announced its plans to launch Tmall Box Office which it envisions “to become like HBO in the United States, to become like Netflix in the United States”.

That’s because the country has one of the most aggressive and generous grant-making programs for R&D in all of Europe. And its engineering schools, including Ecole Politechnique and Ecole Central are first rate and well funded.

The result is a clutch of companies poised for high worldwide growth and solid returns.

Consider Sigfox, a company in our portfolio based in Toulouse. It builds low-energy, low-cost wireless networks that are critical for Internet of Things devices. With deployments that cover most EU countries, it has secured two rounds in funding from more than a dozen firms. The latest round will let it expand into the United States, Latin America, Japan, and South Korea.

Since Sean Ellis coined the term “Growth Hacker” five years ago, the tech community has embraced its ethos. Fueled by tales the success of “growth”-driven companies like Dropbox, Zynga, and AirBnB, the startup ecosystem’s expectations of startup marketing changed in a space of 12 months.

Dropbox’s “Lessons Learned” presentation from 2010, viewed over half a million times, describes marketing in a startup before growth hacking. Their first “Web 2.0 Marketing plan” was:
* Big Launch at TechCrunch
* Buy Some Adwords
* Hire a PR firm, um, a VP Marketing…or something.

The presentation goes on to attribute Dropbox’s success to focusing on customer experience and “virality” via referrals communicated on social media. Coupled with Ellis’ post, Growth Hacking had arrived.

Within a year of Sean Ellis’ post, VC firms Andreessen Horowitz and Kleiner Perkins added “growth” marketers in-house to help their portfolio companies become the next Uber.

And 500 Startups has launched a fund specifically to help promising young companies with growth using its in-house growth hacking (or “distro”) team and is likely the first accelerator to open a growth focused outpost, called Distro Dojo, in London, run by growth expert and PayPal mafia member Matt Lerner.

Canada-based startup D-Wave says it has already has done it. Its chief executive, Vern Brownell, told me in an email that D-Wave Systems has created the first scalable quantum computer, with proven entanglement, and is now working on producing the best results possible for increasingly complex problems. He qualified this claim by stressing that their approach, called “adiabatic computing,” may not be able to solve every problem but has a broad variety of uses in optimizing computations; sampling; machine learning; and constraint satisfaction for commerce, national defense, and science.

Threat from downmarket

The real threat to Fitbit might be the growing set of sub-$100 fitness trackers on the market. The one that Fitbit should, perhaps, be most worried about wasn’t even mentioned as a competitor in the IPO filing.

Xiaomi’s wearables partner company, Huami, produces a $13 fitness tracker — the Mi Band — that has been selling like crazy in China after only six months in the market.

The truth is, selling fitness trackers is becoming a branding game. The component technology itself — the accelerometers and other sensors, the displays, etc. — isn’t that expensive, and prices are dropping.
