As people use the app more frequently, it becomes a habit and will eventually become a norm, just like how we head to Google and Facebook when we’re on a PC. But when we’re on a mobile, these chat apps are probably among the more frequently used apps on your phone. Why? It could be for any number of reasons. But for me, it’s because I want to save on text messages and be accessible on a consistent channel even when I’m overseas.

The site then offers a customer service telephone hotline. The wording of the statement doesn’t mention financial difficulties directly, but it’s likely that cashflow issues – or even crippling debt – are at the heart of the apparent tension between the unnamed “previous shareholders” and the deal site’s management.

Things once looked rosy for 24Quan. In market share stats for October 2011, it rose to become China’s fifth-biggest daily deals site, with six percent of the industry’s revenue for that month. But, in this fierce sector characterized by tiny profit margins and huge marketing spending, it’s likely that 24Quan was burning through cash – or piling up debts – in order to grab share in the market. But by the time of figures (from the same source) for 2012 Q2, 24Quan had crashed to 19th place with a meagre 0.6 percent market share.

In late November, 24Quan CEO Du Yinan responded to our afore-mentioned article about layoffs and debt, and told my colleague that he was, even back then, struggling to make “transformative changes” to the site. It’s not clear what those were, since it continued to plough on as a fairly conventional deals site long after the first reports of its business being in turmoil. He said the site was seeing “in excess of [US]$12,000,000 of cash turnover – every month” at that time.

Groupon-clone deals sites have been pulverized in huge numbers, like so many mosquitoes in the night, in the past couple of years. Indeed, in just the first six months of this year, 2,859 such sites have closed. Perhaps 24Quan can be added to that deadpool, if it doesn’t reappear online as promised within a few weeks.

It’s a fun app that can that can make recordings of your voice and then warp it into one of five different styles: kitty, uncle, echo, hurry, or slow. The ‘echo’ effect is actually more spooky than simply echo-ey, and works great for Hallowe’en. It’s backed up by two optional background noises for ghost noises or a thunderstorm. Sadly, there’s no auto-tune option. Wait, let me rephrase that: Mercifully, there’s no auto-tune option. Then you can share your awesome audio to some of your WeChat buddies – or onto Facebook, or as an MP3 via email.

Of course, there are lots of other voice changer apps out there, but this one is designed to work seamlessly with WeChat – and does well for Facebook too. The app is pretty new, now at v1.1 on both platforms, and hopefully it’ll be updated with some more seasonal voice effects in future.

Tencent is pushing WeChat hard across Southeast Asia, officially launching in Indonesia last month, whilst also focusing on other potentially major markets like India and the US. And of course China. The app passed the 200 million users milestone in September of this year.

ChatWork, a business communication app from Japan with 100,000 users, now eyeing Asia

ChatWork has plenty of fans in Japan. With 100,000 signups, mostly from the country, and 10,000 added every month, the app has been adopted by companies and organizations like Zoho, Kyoto University, and Kuai Hospital. It also partnered with Japanese telco KDDI to create a variant of its app for large enterprises.

Interestingly, at a recent networking event in Singapore where I talked to ChatWork reps and an employee from another Japanese company, the employee proclaimed that he is a ChatWork user. Small world indeed.

Of course, business communication apps are nothing new. So what makes ChatWork, available in web, iOS, and Android versions, different from Yammer or Asana? Here’s how Shuhei Tanigawa, a marketer for ChatWork, put it: Yammer is a social network while ChatWork isn’t. It is a pure communications tool.

Also, while Yammer is ideal for large-scale organizations seeking to bridge the communications gap both horizontally and vertically, ChatWork is built for small teams and SMEs.

The app shares some features with Asana, such as task setting, mobile support, and file attachments. But Asana doesn’t have a group chat feature, making it sort of like a Whatsapp for work. Both apps do operate on a freemium model, although ChatWork does appear to be more affordable.

The company has been around for more than 10 years, providing IT products and services to SMEs. So far, it has managed to build a sustainable business through bootstrapping. It developed and launched ChatWork in March 2011.

BeMyGuest gives travellers authentic experiences with local communities

BeMyGuest has just made it to the semi-finals of Asia’s most prestigious travel startup competition – WebinTravel, and officially launches.

Other than TechVenture, which took place earlier this week, WebInTravel is another notable event which holds one of Asia’s most prestigious web travel startup competition. BeMyGuest.travel, a website for local tourism officially announced its launch in conjunction with WebInTravel.

Silverline, a new venture by Singapore-based sustainable business incubator Newton Circus, has partnered with SingTel on an initiative to put smartphones into the hands of seniors.

But these are not ordinary smartphones. They are refurbished second hand-devices with senior-friendly apps installed.

Connect, for instance, presents the contact list in a visual format to aid the visually impaired. Well Being provides reminders for taking medicine, drinking water, and doing exercise. These are just some of the apps that are available (website has the full list).
