One unique feature of Hike – among such social messaging apps, anyway – is that it also supports SMS, allowing its global users to do Hike2SMS and Indian users to fire back with SMS2Hike. Kavin says that, in feature phone-loving India, approximately half of the usage is via SMS, but, in general around the globe, folks are predominantly messaging when on wifi or mobile data plans.

While Hike is quite minimalistic, it might find people want features that they’re familiar with from Line or WeChat, like video messaging or themed sticker/emoticon packs. Hike will be adding new things, Kavin says, but he’s remaining tight-lipped on what that entails. He adds:

Well, at least there won’t be ads. Judging by Hike’s reception on Android, where it has mostly five-star reviews on Google Play from users around the world, it’s off to a good start with its new audience.

FlowerAdvisor works with partnering florists around the world to send flowers and gifts to customer in over 100 countries. The company recently hit revenues of over US$1 million and is looking to do more in the online florist space.

FlowerAdvisor was founded in 2007 when the founders spotted an opportunity in the market for a trusted, 24-hour delivery flower site which customers could rely on to send gifts to their friends and families around the world.

FlowerAdvisor recently launch a redesign of their website in preparation for the Christmas festive period. e27 interviewed Willy to find out more about operating, and working with, a global network of florist to cater to customers worldwide.

Tell us the story behind FlowerAdvisor.

FlowerAdvisor was founded in 2007 and officially launched in 2008. The idea came about as a result of a prominent absence of a single strong brand in Asia for international flower delivery. Online users found it a struggle to discover a trusted, 24-hour delivery flower site which can be relied upon to send flowers, hampers and gifts to their loved ones anywhere in the world.

Although there are plenty of talented local florists, most are not keen to spend millions on infrastructure to build a stable and secure site that enables and manages e-commerce transactions. To make matters worse, Asia and Europe have one of the highest number of e-commerce fraud cases which made customers very skeptical of small sites.

We work with local florists in every country. The nearest florist to the recipient location will be selected to deliver the order as this will make sure that the flowers will be fresh upon delivery.

Its quite difficult to set up the distribution network when we started as we operate in more than 100 countries to make it difficult we are very selective in choosing our partners and we only work with local florist to make sure our prices are competitive locally. Furthermore, every country has their own culture and own way of doing delivery therefore we have to adjust to their requirements accordingly.

Due to the busy routines and e commerce revolutions, the way we shop has transformed compared to the old times where we need to see and touch before we purchase. Nowadays, people are looking for something that is convenient and hassle free. With purchasing flowers or gifts online, they do not have to go to the shop to select the items and deliver the item directly to the recipient.

Our customers are located globally and we serve individual and corporate customers. Our revenue is more than US$1 million dollar last year and it is expected to increase this year.

The Jakarta Post Reveals Its New Travel Site

When Budi Putra was hired by The Jakarta Post as the CEO to run its digital venture earlier this year, he implemented a series of changes that allowed the newspaper’s website to run independently of the newspaper, sharing only the name and some stories. He wanted to push more feature sections that can stand on their own rather than being part of the main news website. The first of those is the travel channel which has now gone into live beta with a look that is becoming very familiar across the web.

More and more websites are focusing on visuals, especially photographs and images to draw attention to content and The Jakarta Post isn’t immune to the trend. Being a travel site, it would actually be a surprise if it wasn’t relying heavily on photos. At the moment, the website is far from finished and it was pushed live perhaps to gauge opinion and input from visitors.

We’ve been informed that the current website for The Jakarta Post is not the main site for The Jakarta Post Digital and this might explain the lack of linkage to the travel site. In fact, the future site of Jakarta Post Digital may well be at jakpost.com, an address which is currently being redirected to the travel site.

Being a travel guide, it’s not that crucial in many cases to have the very latest news, hence the emphasis on destinations, accommodations, activities, and visually arresting images to draw people into the stories, all of which were published by the newspaper at some point in the last few years, including new ones. It would certainly be useful if they can take a look at those older stories and provide them with an update that reflects the current condition or situation if necessary.

While the site already contains many entries with sharp, colorful, and vibrant photos, much of it feels rather barren. By no means I’m suggesting that it should be filled with links, banner ads, and other potentially distracting elements, but the hard column split between the images and the text instills a deep sense of disconnect as if they represent two different stories.

Sina Weibo Android App Adds Support for Social App Recommendations

Friends and online contacts are a great source of app recommendations. And Sina Weibo, China’s top Twittery service, seems to agree. In the newly updated Sina Weibo for Android (v.3.2.0 beta 1), the social network adds cards to your stream (pictured above) whenever someone you follow installs an app from Sina’s (NASDAQ:SINA) own third-party app store [1].

It’s all pretty useful. Though an unwary individual might find himself or herself – well, more likely ‘himself’ – downloading an app of a saucy nature, such as Japanese Beauties Bouncy Boobies Live Wallpaper [2], from Sina’s Android app market, and then seeing it broadcast to all your followers.
