Kakao Page targets the creative type, which includes artists, writers, musicians and other such individuals and groups. The platform can be used to sell and market songs, video and e-books to other users within the Kakao platform. Kakao CEO Brian Kim says Kakao Page is not just an online repository of digital content. “People upload content to places like the App Store and Google Play but the content doesn’t get any exposure. VentureSquare notes that the online platform might face a bit of a challenge at first, given the lack of free content. However, Kakao is optimistic it will reach its goal of 1 million profit-earning content creators within three years. The platform itself is free to access, although the company plans to take a percentage cut from content sales.

Happenin is a social networking service from Korean mobile app maker greySox that focuses on photo sharing with a geographic dimension.

Social media services like Facebook, Twitter and the like will let you check out recent trends and discussions through blurbs of text (Twitter) or a richer mix of text and multimedia (Facebook). Some would even focus on your location (Foursquare) But let’s say we limit the social stream to just photos and your location. What do we get? This is just what mobile app called Happenin aims to be.

As such, while text-based microblogging services like Twitters and the various Weibo services from China are largely confined within language groups, Happenin can get users across borders connected.

Happenin is a free download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

Veeam brings its backup solutions to the cloud

Veeam Backup Cloud Edition aims to simplify backups and offer an affordable alternative to tape and offsite backup storage.

Veeam software, provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions, announced yesterday that the #1 VM backup solution is now cloud-ready.

Veeam Backup Cloud Edition supports 15 different public storage clouds, such as Windows Azure, Amazon S3, HP Cloud and Rackspace. This also includes support for clouds built on OpenStack. It aims to turn every cloud storage in the market into a simplified data storehouse for backups, offering an affordable alternative to tape and offsite backup storage.

Key benefits include automated copying of local backups to the cloud on a scheduled basis, more secured backups to the cloud with an AES 256-bit encryption, simple and fuss-free set up with no need of cloud storage APIs knowledge, and an annual subscription license.

3 hot mobile e-commerce trends in Asia

Dave Sloan, Head of Product at ShopSpot, shares his thoughts on mobile e-commerce trends in Asia for 2013.

In the past few years, Asians have quickly taken to the mobile Internet. And most recently, Asian smartphone users have turned their attention to mobile shopping. For Asia, light, mobile-centric e-commerce models have proven to be more successful than traditional, desktop-centric ecommerce 1.0 models. Here are a few examples of mobile commerce trends in Asia:

1) Loyalty apps

Loyalty apps like Perx and Squiryl are definitely a hot trend in the restaurant-crazy Asian culture. iPhone and Android users simply download a loyalty app that becomes part of their ‘mobile wallet.’

Activity in these loyalty apps is most often shared via Facebook and Twitter, essentially socializing the age-old concept of a loyalty program. The value proposition is simple; don’t carry conventional paper loyalty cards, simply scan a QR code each time you dine and earn credits towards a free meal. And naturally, these loyalty apps are evolving into discovery tools, integrating location-based services and providing local restaurant recommendations, much like Foursquare or Yelp.

Flash sales sites like Groupon and LivingSocial have been pushing hard in Asia, as seen by Groupon’s recent launch of a concept store in Singapore.

Facebook Offers is a new, coupon-like Facebook ad unit that has shown strong signs of success in Asia, as seen with impressive case studies by Ocean Park Hong Kong and Qoo10 Singapore. For example, Qoo10 ran a Facebook Offer that ran for three days that saw 15,000 claims and 82 percent increase in member registration.

This is mobile commerce ‘lite’ in that it helps users discover and engage with hot fashion items while generating leads for local offline and online shops.

In all three of these mobile commerce examples, the complexity of payment and shipping are avoided all together, simplifying the user experience. Traditional ecommerce 1.0 models like Amazon or eBay have been slow to gain traction in Asia because of lack of a widely adopted electronic payment system (like credit cards or Paypal in the US) and fragmented infrastructure that makes shipping expensive and inconvenient. The key to ecommerce in Asia has been to provide a convenient mobile experience, remove the complexity of payment / shipping, and provide value that was previously less accessible.

How to do an Uber-like car rental business in China?

Uber-like services won’t be banned by local regulators in China like what Uber encountered in the U.S.; however, they have their respective problems. Zhou Hang, founder of Yongche and serial entrepreneur, gives some color about doing such a business in China.

Yongche, founded in 2010, was one of the first Uber-style car rental services in China. It’s funded by ZhenFund, Morningside Ventures and Qualcomm Ventures.

Opportunities

Zhou Hang saw opportunities in over ten thousand car rental companies in China. Most of them are small- or mid- sized and operated in a traditional way – providing big companies with long term rentals. As they rely on social connections for orders, their business cannot scale up, Zhou said.

Now the vehicles available on Yongche are from small-sized rental companies the company reached partnership with. The platform covers twenty first-tier cities with several thousand limousines in service.
