Tencent’s Smart Device OS Leaked In Pictures

After launching Tencent Operating System or TOS at the beginning of this year, Chinese Internet tycoon Tencent rolled out TOS+ strategy last week at GMIC to make the system available for more emerging categories of smart devices ranging from smart wearables, smart TV to virtual reality headsets. Just a few days later, the first leaked images of TencentOS have appeared online.

The pictures show the Android-based system supports a variety of features that are typical for smart watches, like sports data monitoring, messaging, answering phone call, music, email alert. TencentOS also supports voice commands, payment transaction and it is going to feature several local life services like taxi-hailing, restaurant reservation, fast check-in to get users better informed in different usage scenarios.

TOS+ aims to build an open source platform that connects all kinds of smart devices, according to the company. For Tencent, it is all ideal platforms for pushing other services like gaming, social and entertainment services, mobile payment services, and more.

Viewing a PDF in your browser is as easy as 1-2-3. But for years since Adobe released this file format, there wasn’t much that you could do with it.

Then came apps and extensions that allow you to do a lot more with your PDF files such as Notable PDF.

Notable PDF is a cloud-based Google Chrome app and extension that lets users collaborate around PDF files.

Let’s look at how it works. Once installed in your browser, the Notable PDF icon appears on your omnibar. Just click on the icon to access the extension.

“During interactions, the device, recognizes emotional states in subjects by comparing detected sensor input against a database of human/primate gestures/expressions, posture, and speech,” the patent reads. “Feedback is provided to the wearer after interpretation of the sensor input.”

Once the database determines the emotional response, various kinds of corresponding content can be pushed into the user’s view.

Twitter said today that more than a million people signed into Periscope during the first 10 days after it the livestreaming mobile app.

CEO Dick Costolo revealed the numbers during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.

Baidu invests $11M in restaurant management platform to bring more local businesses under its wing

Restaurant management software-as-a-service startup Keru Cloud today announced it has secured RMB 66 million (US$10.7 million) in series B funding led by Baidu and Tianxing Capital (hat-tip to 36kr). Fangjinglin Investment and Kaixing Capital also participated in the round.

The startup aims to be an all-in-one solution for restaurants and other businesses to go digital. It reports 3,000 restaurants nationwide, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and several more Chinese cities. By the end of this year it hopes to up that number to 20,000 merchants.

Searching for a local business signed up for Baidu Connect on Baidu Search will bring the user straight to the web app. In the case of Keru Cloud’s restaurants, this allows customers to do things like book a table, order takeout, or keep track of their place in a long queue. Baidu Maps and Nuomi, the daily deals site that Baidu bought from Renren last year, are incorporated into the web apps as well. In addition, Baidu Connect also gives businesses analytics and online marketing capabilities.

This was Baidu’s second investment in Keru Cloud after a low-key contribution in April 2014.

With its latest cash injection, Keru Cloud plans to enter into more service sectors, such as gyms, massage parlors, and spas. The startup will also increase investment in product development and expand its sales and operations teams.

Xiaomi-backed P2P loans startup Jimubox secures $84M series C funding

Peer-to-peer lending startup Jimubox has just secured $84 million in series C funding. It comes seven months after the Beijing-based firm attracted US$37 million from Xiaomi and ShunWei Capital, a venture capital fund headed by the phone maker’s founder, Lei Jun.

This time round the lead investor is UK’s Investec Bank. Haitong Kaiyuan Investment also joined in, along with new investors Mandra Capital and Zhong Capital Fund. Existing Jimubox backers Matrix China Partners, Xiaomi, Shunwei, Ventech China, and Magic Stone Alternative also threw in some cash.

Taiwan music streamer KKBox invests in ticket vending startup WalkieTicket

KKBox, the Taipei-based music streaming firm, announced it has invested in WalkieTicket, a ticket vending startup from the same city. The terms and size of the investment aren’t disclosed, but the deal will make KKBox WalkieTicket’s largest institutional shareholder. Taiwan Family Mart, the domestic branch of the Japanese convenience store chain, also contributed to the round.

Founded in 2010 by CEO Jay Wang, WalkieTicket works with local vendors to sell tickets for concerts and events. Users can purchase tickets directly through WalkieTickets’ website and apps, or through one of several third parties – most notably FamilyMart. The convenience store chain, which has over 2,900 outlets in Taiwan, sells a variety of goods and services through its FamiPort digital vending machines.

The collaboration will see each party compensate for the other’s gaps. KKBox can help drive ticket sales through traffic on its music streaming app, while WalkieTicket, which is older than KKTix, can share its tight network of vendors. In addition, KKBox can draw from its data of user listening habits to recommend upcoming events.
